I never had to do this until version 8.x either. But I’ve had a mixed success on these two:

1. in the CMC./DSC right click on a server with notes installed and published and refresh registry information. The file extensions will be imported into the content redirection screens.

2. If that doesn’t work you need to update the file type extensions on the citrix servers. Have a look at this:
